Last week Ben Cook, Senior Technical Consultant looked at how applications may function if moved to a VMware ThinApp environment. To highlight how not all virtual platforms are the same, this week Ben tested the same four applications but looked at how they would function if moved to a Symantec Workspace Virtualization (SWV) environment. Using the SWV report groups included in AOK Virtualise-It, Ben has tested the applications and we can see the types of issues that may be encountered by organisations considering the move to this virtual platform.
ChangeBASE AOK 4.1
Naturally, ChangeBASE is interested to see how its own products react to new environments. AOK was given the green light, and the Symantec package Ben created works well.
AOK result: Correct.
FileZilla 3.5.1
AOK also marked this as green, and Ben was able to create a fully working Symantec package for this application.
AOK result: Correct.
Google Chrome 14
This application a got the go ahead, and the Symantec package is fully functional.
AOK result: Correct.
Lightroom 3.3 (x64)
AOK flagged this as red, indicating that this application would not work in a SWV environment. As predicated the package Ben tried to create for Lightroom failed.
AOK result: Correct.
As you can see, only one out of the four applications tested were deemed unsuitable for virtualisation with SWV. This is a good result for Symantec Workspace Virtualization compatibility and very similar to the results we found last week with ThinApp.
All in all, AOK was able to accurately and successfully assess the selected applications ready for SWV deployment. All this was achieved in minutes - how long would this have taken if approached manually, and at what cost? Would the results have been consistent and accurate, with all changes supported by an audit trail?

Thanks for your interest in the Virtual Platform of the Week series, and don't forget to check out Ben's assessment of Citrix XenApp next time.
